| This involves
making custom fitted pieces of porcelain and bonding them to the front
of the teeth. It is very similar to bonding with filling materials
except the quality of the material is much better, as is the end result
in the short and long term. The colour and translucency of porcelain
is more similar to natural enamel and more dramatic changes to colour/whiteness,
size and shape can be done using porcelain. In the long term the material
is less likely to chip or break as it is much stronger, and it
will not stain or discolour. Consider the analogy of a wooden
table, which may have a beautiful veneer of cherry or mahogany, but
underneath it is plywood or some other material. Your teeth may
be dark, crooked or uneven, but with a porcelain veneer on the outside
they can make a dramatic change to your smile. In cases of extremely
dark or crooked teeth, bonding with filling material as described
above will not work at all, and the only cosmetic solution is to use
porcelain. |

| Placing porcelain
veneers is usually a two step process. In almost all cases, the existing
teeth need to be shaped slightly and an impression done, much like
is done for crowns or bridges. Temporaries are made which will mimic
the final end result. These can be modified at chairside if necessary
until they are perfect or nearly so. Usually a cosmetic work up has
been done previously so that the temporaries are already close to
the expected final result. The information gathered during the cosmetic
workup as well as the shape of the temporaries is sent to the dental
laboratory so that they know exactly how the veneers need to look.
Approximately two weeks later the temporaries are removed, the veneers
are tried in place and inserted. The moment you leave the office
your porcelain veneers are ready for eating, talking and smiling! |
